Governor SBP Confirms New Currency Notes Printing Soon in Pakistan 2026

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has announced a significant update regarding the introduction of newly designed currency notes, confirming that the printing process will begin once the federal cabinet grants formal approval to the final designs.
Speaking at a press conference following the announcement of the latest monetary policy, Jameel Ahmad, Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, said the process had reached an advanced stage and would move swiftly after cabinet clearance.
Printing to Begin After Cabinet Approval
“The process of printing new-design banknotes is at an advanced stage. We will soon start printing, subject to cabinet approval. Two to three currency notes of different denominations will be printed simultaneously,” the SBP governor said while responding to a question during the briefing.
He added that the redesigned notes would be introduced gradually into the market, ensuring a smooth transition from the existing currency in circulation.
Phased Introduction into Circulation
According to the SBP governor, the new currency notes will only be released once the central bank builds the minimum required stock necessary to replace the existing notes in a phased manner.
“The new-design notes will come into circulation as soon as the central bank achieves the minimum stock to replace the notes currently in circulation,” he stated.
However, the SBP did not disclose which denominations would be introduced first.
Current Currency Denominations in Pakistan
At present, Pakistan’s currency notes in circulation include denominations of Rs. 10, Rs. 20, Rs. 50, Rs. 75, Rs. 100, Rs. 500, Rs. 1,000, and Rs. 5,000. Officials have yet to clarify whether all denominations will be redesigned at once or introduced in stages.
Designs Already Submitted for Approval
Governor Jameel Ahmad confirmed that the redesigned currency notes have already been forwarded to the government and subsequently placed before the federal cabinet for final approval.
“We have sent the new designs to the government for approval, and the government has placed them before the cabinet,” he said.
Cabinet Committee Reviewing Redesign Proposals
Earlier this month, the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that the federal cabinet, chaired by Shehbaz Sharif, reviewed proposals related to the redesign of Pakistan’s currency notes.
Following the review, a cabinet committee was formed to examine the matter in detail. The cabinet was informed that the redesign process is being carried out in line with modern security and design requirements, with technical assistance from international experts.
What This Means for the Public
The introduction of newly designed currency notes is expected to enhance security features, improve durability, and align Pakistan’s banknotes with modern international standards. The SBP has emphasized that existing currency notes will remain legal tender during the transition period.
Further updates are expected once the federal cabinet grants formal approval and the printing process officially begins.
